  Technicians are usually taught pole-climbing as soon as they are hired, but this was deemed unnecessary for me as my group were being sent directly to Manhattan. In order to make it easier to loan us out (and, I suspect, easier to eventually shuffle us around) myself and a few of my co-workers have been sent to pole-climbing school.

There are some filmmakers whose work cries out for a high definition presentation. John Carpenter is certainly one of these, and so far, I've seen Halloween on Blu-ray and The Thing on HD-DVD. The Blu-ray edition of The Thing is being trashed all over the place because the superb documentary Terror Takes Shape has been cut up and made into a sporadic picture-in-picture form. Ugh. Now I'm glad that I picked it up on HD-DVD when it was cheap, I know there's going to be a run on them now.

I sometimes wonder what reviewers are thinking. John Carpenter's The Thing is a film often criticized for being short on characterization, and while I agree that it is sketchy at best, but I've always felt that worked in the film's favor. I just activated my new Chase card yesterday, so today I had to go through all of my subscriptions and whatnot and change all that information. I expected it to take a few minutes. It took a few hours.
